Other Languages Spoken: The vast majority (98%) of the population speaks Arabic; about 1% speaks Berber. French is also widely spoken by Tunisians.
Business Language(s): Arabic and French are the most widely used languages in business. Some administrative texts are also in French. English is not very commonly used in business. A number of business persons in Tunisia also speak German and Italian.

Country Overview

Area: 163,610 km²
Type of State: After the fall of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011 and the move towards a more democratic Tunisia, a new Constitution was ratified on 10 February 2014. According to the terms of the Constitution, Tunisia is a free State, sovereign and independent. It is a parliamentary republic, with a legal system based on the French civil code and Islamic law. Islam is the official religion. The power instituted by the Constitution is founded on the sovereignty of the people and the separation of powers.
Nevertheless, following the new 2022 constitution, Tunisia switched from the hybrid parliamentary-presidential system under its postrevolutionary constitution to a presidential system.
Type of Economy: Lower-middle-income economy.
French colony up to 1956 and is now having strong economic ties with the European Union. An economy based on agriculture, the mining and energy sectors and tourism.
